General surgery is a broad surgical specialty that focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of conditions related to the alimentary canal and abdominal organs. This includes the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, liver, pancreas, gallbladder, appendix, bile ducts, and in many cases, the thyroid gland. General surgeons also manage diseases of the skin, breast, and soft tissues, as well as trauma-related injuries, peripheral arterial conditions, and hernias. In addition, the specialty involves performing essential endoscopic procedures such as gastroscopy and colonoscopy.
